Meet the Walk Coordinators, Gay and Scott Duncan
After two years in college, Gay shifted into an active business life supporting her newlywed husband (1979) through university and then working as a management assistant at Honeywell in Scarborough in the 1980’s. Then along came two children, Jaime (1985) and Corey (1989) so her priority shifted to running the household and she switched to part time work at Honeywell. In the mid 1990’s Gay took a bold step to start her own business in computer training. Her business took off and in the 2010’s she was a sought-after resource in computer training and application development.
Gay Duncan was diagnosed with Scleroderma in 2014. Its impact was mostly skin hardening and severe joint movement limitations, and lots of pain. She could no longer work and had to retire and shut down her business.
Fortunately, in 2017 and 2018 she was registered in a double-blind drug trial with Dr. Johnson’s Scleroderma Clinic at Mt. Sinai. After a year and a half of drug therapy her skin softened substantially, and she regained much of the joint movement. Unfortunately, the disease scaring has left her with chronic (constant) pain in her hands, face, and neck. Currently her disease has stabilized, (not getting worse, not getting better), but she personally knows of people who have died a long and painful death at the hands of this awful disease. Gay counts herself as one of the “lucky ones”.
Scott graduated with Mechanical Engineering from U of T (1980) and worked at Honeywell for nearly 35 years in positions of Engineering, Marketing, Manufacturing and Sales Management. The last five years before retiring he was the Marketing and Sales Manager at DESCO Plumbing and Heating wholesaler.
In 2015, we created Team FRoG, (FRiends of Gay) and joined in the annual fund-raising event each June to raise awareness for Scleroderma. Our terrific support group of friends, family and associates have supported our team both financially and walking with us in our green FRoG t-shirts along with other “froggy” attire. In the past 10 years Team FRoG has raise over $55,000 in support of Scleroderma research and awareness.
In 2018 we met a couple (Dave and Jayne) on a Caribbean cruise at an open sitting dinner. We discovered that Dave has Scleroderma and Gay continues to hold a special bond with him. They are from the UK, and we talk regularly during the year and continue to plan joint vacations. We continue to have new encounters with people suffering from Scleroderma in all parts of our lives.
We attended the Scleroderma Conference in Newfoundland last September (2024), we met so many other Scleroderma sufferers, and their family and friends. It was a really special experience for us. After the conference, someone at our gym asked Gay why we went. He said “Misery loves company?” and Gay said, “that’s not it at all. It’s meeting other people with the same disease and seeing how they cope. It was refreshing to share my experience with others and have them really listen and understand.” It was special for Gay to share her experience with others who suffer similarly. It made her feel seen, and heard, and it was so nice for her to meet other Scleroderma sufferers and make them feel seen and heard as well. Gay keeps in touch with a number of the people we met.
